English abstract

This thesis deals with a specific way of teaching information literacy: The library online-tutorial. After giving an introduction into information literacy or rather the teaching of information literacy, the author tries to design a typology of the online tutorial considering the context of e-learning. Furthermore, the work provides a survey of the current situation at German academic libraries concerning the use of tutorials. A crucial part of the thesis comprises the analysis and evaluation of three selected tutorials, which emerge as especially exemplary and forward-looking. Beforehand, a catalogue of criteria for the analysis and evaluation of the tutorials has been depicted. The master’s thesis shows that online-tutorials can be an efficient and effective way of teaching information literacy. This does not imply that the reference or teaching librarian will be completely replaced. At the same time, it becomes evident that in spite of some outstanding tutorial projects, the German academic libraries look after online-tutorials rather reluctantly. Lack of cooperation and fear of high expenses have to be seen as the main obstacles for the widespread use of tutorials.

Die Masterarbeit befasst sich mit einer besonderen Form der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz: dem bibliothekarischen Online-Tutorial. Nach einer Einführung in das Thema Informationskompetenz bzw. Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz wird versucht, vor dem Hintergrund des übergeordneten Themas E-Learning eine Typologie des Online-Tutorials zu erstellen und einen quantitativen Überblick über den Einsatz von Tutorials an deutschen Hochschulbibliotheken zu geben. Aufbauend auf der Zusammenstellung eines Katalogs von Analyse- und Bewertungskriterien für Online-Tutorials werden drei ausgewählte Tutorials, die als besonders zukunftsträchtig und vorbildlich gelten können, einer bewertenden Analyse unterzogen. Die Master’s Thesis zeigt, dass Online-Tutorials potenziell eine effiziente und effektive Form der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz darstellen, auch wenn sie den Auskunftsbibliothekar oder den „teaching librarian“ nie vollständig ersetzen können. Außerdem wird deutlich, dass sich trotz einiger herausragender Beispiele das deutsche Hochschulbibliothekswesen nur zögerlich des Online-Tutorials annimmt, wobei die Scheu vor dem ggf. beträchtlichen Entwicklungsaufwand und mangelnde Kooperation die Haupthindernisse für eine flächendeckende Verbreitung sein dürften.
