English abstract

The general objective of this report is to offer structured information regarding the scientific output of Spanish researchers by area of knowledge, at the national and international levels, as a tool for the analysis of opportunities for emerging areas of knowledge, and to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish system of science and technology. The present paper deals exclusively with the results of research registered by the internationally visible publications in the databases of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) during the period 1998-2002. Patents are excluded, as are results pertaining to technological innovation. In particular, the data aim to: • Determine the volume of scientific output that is internationally visible at the regional and national level. • Describe the evolution over time and compare levels of output in the international realm. • Define the patterns of scientific communication of Spanish researchers in the different subject areas. • Determine the scientific output on different levels of aggregation (geographical and thematic). • Estimate the international standing of Spanish science in terms of impact and effort/resources. • Identify the networks of collaboration and their characteristics.

El objetivo general de este informe es ofrecer una información estructurada sobre la producción científica de los investigadores españoles, por área de conocimiento, a nivel nacional e internacional, como instrumento para el análisis de oportunidades de áreas emergentes del concocimiento y de fortalezas y debilidades del sistema español de ciencia y tecnología. En este trabajo se tratan exclusivamente los resultados de investigación que recogen las publicaciones visibles internacionalmente de las bases de datos del Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) en el periodo 1998-2002. Se excluyen patentes y resultados propios de la innovación tecnológica. En particular, el informe trata de: - Conocer el volumen de producción científica visible internacionalmente a nivel regional y nacional. - Describir su evolución a lo largo del tiempo y compararla a nivel internacional. - Definir los patrones de comunicación científica de los investigadores españoles en las diferentes áreas temáticas - Conocer la producción científica en distintos niveles de agregación (geográfico y temático) - Estimar la posición internacional de la ciencia española en términos de impacto y esfuerzo. - Identificar las redes de colaboración existentes y sus características
