English abstract

Reports the results of a study on the collection of science and technology in school resource centres of four secondary schools in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. The study indicates that most science and technology collection were published in 1989 and before (54%). Books published in 1997 only accounts for 1.1%. As for other non-book collection, most were published after 1993. In terms of age of publication, the collection of science and tehnology materials, it was found that eight out of thirteen subjects were published before 1989. This clearly indicates that the majority of books found in school resource centres studied were more than nine years old. Most of the science and technology collection were for loan and were published in Bahasa Melayu. It was found that teachers borrowed more books than non-book materials. The students were allowed to borrow books only. The most popular material read and used by both teachers and students per week was Mathematics. The majority of the respondents were of the opinion that the collection of sceience and technology in school resource centres were inadequate.

Melaporkan dapatan kajian mengenai analisis koleksi sains dan teknologi Pusat Sumber Sekolah (PSS). Kajian mendapati koleksi sains dan teknologi yang terdapat di PSS menengah yang dikaji kebanyakannya diterbitkan dalam tahun 1989 dan sebelumnya iaitu sebanyak 54.2%. Buku yang diterbitkan dalam tahun 1997 hanyalah sebanyak 1.1% sahaja daripada keseluruhan koleksi buku sains dan teknologi. Sementara itu bagi bahan bukan buku pula, tidak ada bahan yang diterbitkan selepas tahun 1993. Dari segi usia koleksi, didapati lapan daripada tiga belas bidang subjek yang dikaji mempunyai peratus yang tinggi bagi buku yang diterbitkan sebelum tahun 1989. Ini menunjukkan majoriti buku yang terdapat di PSS menengah merupakan buku-buku yang telah berusia lebih daripada sembilan tahun. Kebanyakan koleksi sains dan teknologi yang dikaji dikategorikan sebagai koleksi yang boleh dipinjam. Koleksi tersebut juga kebanyakannya diterbitkan dalam Bahasa Melayu. Kajian mendapati guru lebih banyak meminjam buku berbanding dengan bahan bukan buku. Pelajar di semua PSS menengah yang dikaji hanya dibenarkan meminjam buku sahaja. Buku yang paling banyak dibaca dan digunakan oleh guru dan pelajar dalam tempoh seminggu ialah buku Matematik. Kebanyakan guru dan pelajar juga berpendapat bahawa koleksi buku sains dan teknologi yang terdapat di PSS menengah mereka adalah tidak mencukupi.
