English abstract

Training is an ongoing process in most libraries. Even if there isn’t much turnover in full-time staff, there often is in part-time, student, and volunteer workers. Often many of these workers have minimal training before working on their own. It is useful to have a training document that visually illustrates how to do something if the trainer is not available. Photo sharing sites, like Flickr, allow workers to have access to text and visual training materials at any time during the day. These materials become even more valuable when users can notate the training materials to make them clearer for others. This presentation will describe how Flickr was successfully implemented as a training tool for government documents and microtext student workers at Wake Forest University. In addition, this presentation will also cover how to integrate Flickr with a wiki-based handbook and include a discussion of how these tools can be used in other library settings. The presentation will conclude with practical step-by-step instructions for how to use Flickr. If the presentation is offered via a Screencast/Vodcast each of the above sections will be covered in about seven or eight minutes. However, if participants would like further information on the integration of a wiki with a Flickr account, I can adapt the presentation to fit their interests. If the presentation were a podcast, the audio would focus more on theory and a discussion of merits/drawbacks, but I would like to include a website so that listeners could click on links and interact with websites as I talk about a page. If the presentation were to be given in text, there would be a heavy incorporation of image, video, and some audio.
