English abstract

It is estimated that more than 4000 popular science and technology books and over 10000 articles are published in Kannada. As they are all scattered and no comprehensive collection exists in any library of Karnataka, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive catalogue and a database of such popular science books. Users face problem if they need to know about existence published popular science books and to choose any book of their interest. A decade long efforts of Karnataka Rajya Vijnyana Parishath with financial aid from DST of Government of India to compile and publish a catalogue has resulted in "Annotated bibliography of popular science books in Kannada". It is neither annotated nor carefully designed and brought out publication and as a result it cannot be used by those who either know only English or only Kannada as titles are transliterated and rendered only in Roman alphabets. The need for developing a database and a comprehensive catalogue of popular science books in Kannada remains unfulfilled.

ಇದುವರೆಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು ೪೦೦೦ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ೧೦೦೦೦ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಅಂದಾಜಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಹರಿದು ಹಂಚಿಹೋಗಿದ್ದು ಯಾವುದೇ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಇವುಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಲಭ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿ ಹಾಗೂ ದತ್ತಾಂಶ ತುರ್ತಿನ ಅಗತ್ಯಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಈ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯ ವಿಷಯದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿಯನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಲು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಅನುದಾನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಒಂದು ದಶಕದ ಶ್ರಮದ ಫಲವಾದ" Annotated bibliography of popular science books in kannada" ಸೂಚಿಯು ಸೂಕ್ತ ಭಾಷ್ಯ/ವಿವರಣೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ರೂಪಿಸಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ಸೂಚಿಯ ಲPಣಗಳನ್ನೂ ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಲಿಪ್ಯಂತರಿಸಿ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊರತಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಸೂಚಿಯು ಕೇವಲ ಕನ್ನಡ ಅಥವಾ ಕೇವಲ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಲ್ಲ ಎರಡೂ ವರ್ಗದವರಿಗೆ ಉಪಯೋಗವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಸೂಚಿ ಹಾಗೂ ದತ್ತಾಂಶ ಇನ್ನೂ ಕನಸಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ.
