English abstract

Prediction of extinction of printed books and traditional libraries has been a fancy preoccupation of futurologists of paperless society. This paper examines whether books and libraries are going to be the matter of past. Standard reference tools in electronic form are better replacements for the printed ones with several advantages like being economical, widely accessible, dynamic, searchable, ease of publishing and distribution. On the contrary, e-books, particularly those for continuous reading, face many disadvantages like lack of personalization, uniform format, necessity of a e-book reader, and physical strain. In addition e-books inherit all the hazards posed by electronic media. Advantages of printed books for serious and fast reading, better assimilation, thought provocation, thinking and also for intrinsic self growth make them more sought after by users. A national readership survey showed that reading habit has not declined over time, instead, book publishing, sales and borrowing from libraries have increased, despite the much hyped prediction of paperless society.

ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳ ಅಂತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಾರುವುದರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಾಗದರಹಿತ ಸಮಾಜದ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಕರು ಮಗ್ನರಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ಲೇಖನವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳು ಗತಕಾಲದ ನೆನಪುಗಳಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದು ಹೋಗುವುವೇ ಎಂದು ಅವಲೋಕಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಪರಾಮರ್ಶನ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳನ್ನು ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊರತಂದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವು ಹುಡುಕಲು, ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿತರಣೆಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗಿರುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ವೆಚ್ಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಸಾರಮಾಡಲು ನೆರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಇ-ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಪರ್ಯಾಯವಾಗಬಲ್ಲವು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯತಿರಿಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಓದನ್ನು ಬೇಡುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಆದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಆಪ್ತತೆ ಮಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ರೀಡರ್ ಸಲPರಣೆ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದಲೇ ಓದಬೇಕಾದ ಇವುಗಳಿಂದ ದೈಹಿಕ ಆಯಾಸವುಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಇ-ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಅಪಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಶೀಘ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಂಭೀರ ಓದು, ಉತ್ತಮ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆ, ಚಿಂತನೆಯ ಉದ್ದೀಪನ, ಆತ್ಮಮುಖಿ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗಳು ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಲಾಭಗಳು. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಓದುಗ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷೆಯಂತೆ ಓದುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ ಕ್ಷೀಣಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ, ಮಾರಾಟ ಹಾಗೂ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳಿಂದ ಎರವಲು ಪಡೆಯುವಿಕೆಯು ಕಾಗದರಹಿತ ಸಮಾಜದ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದನೆಯ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ ಸಮಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ವೃದ್ಧಿಸಿವೆ.
