English abstract

Union catalogues have already existed in the United States and some European countries since the seventies and had a beneficial effect on both the financial and the operational level of the libraries. In addition, their existence promoted the cooperation among the libraries to such an extent that in the long run they were able, without any loss of their individual character and their identity, to form consortia and thus face the technological and other challenges of the last decades. United, they were also able to meet some of the financial pressures that originated from the publishing market. The final result was the offer of better service to their users' needs. In Greece, a development programme called "EPEAEK", has procured in the last few years EU funds for the support of educational and professional training. In the context of the programme, the horizontal line of the action "Libraries" aims, among other things, to create the necessary infrastructure for the esta¬blishment of a Greek academic libraries' union catalogue. The working group that did the research and prepared the study with the standards for a Greek union catalogue, as well as the system specifications, will present the specific advantages offered to the Greek academic libraries by the coming establishment of the union catalogue. It will also analyze the necessary conditions that the individual libraries will have to provide for the implementation of the project. Emphasis will also be given on the changes that librarians will see in their regular operation. Last, but most important, the projected improvements in the services offered to the users will be discussed.
