Abstract

The present Master’s Thesis deals with information literacy in academic libraries. Following
the description of theoretic principles, development and current state of discussion in the US
are compared to the situation in Germany, drawing on important surveys, strategic papers
and models. The main distinctions between both countries are the different historic initial
conditions and the varying general frameworks. The current practice of information literacy in
university libraries and libraries of universities of applied sciences in the state of Northrhine-
Westphalia is explored within the empiric part by website analysis. It shows that manifold
activities to enhance information literacy can be identified, whereas the usability of the websites
can be improved. The final part oft the survey outlines possibilities for further improvement
of general information literacy in Germany.

Die vorliegende Master’s Thesis beschäftigt sich mit der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz
(engl.: Information Literacy) an Hochschulbibliotheken. Im Anschluss an die Darlegung
theoretischer Grundlagen werden Entwicklung und derzeitiger Stand der Diskussion des
Themas in den USA und Deutschland verglichen, wobei auf bedeutende Untersuchungen,
Strategiepapiere und Modelle Bezug genommen wird. Als Hauptunterschiede zwischen beiden
Ländern werden die verschiedenen historischen Ausgangsbedingungen sowie die unterschiedlichen
Rahmenbedingungen identifiziert. Die derzeitige Praxis von Informationskompetenzvermittlung
an nordrhein-westfälischen Universitäts- und Fachhochschulbibliotheken
wird im empirischen Teil anhand einer Website-Analyse untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass
inzwischen vielfältige Aktivitäten zur Verbesserung der Informationskompetenz nachweisbar
sind, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit der Internet-Auftritte in vielen Fällen jedoch noch optimiert
werden kann. Den Abschluss bildet ein Ausblick auf Möglichkeiten zur weiteren Verbesserung
der allgemeinen Informationskompetenz in Deutschland.
