Abstract

Tras cinco años funcionando en el barrio de Monte Alto (A Coruña), el Club de Lectura ha llegado a ser un lugar de encuentro y acogida para un sector de la población de este barrio, que cuenta con una alta tasa de envejecimiento y en donde se dan diferentes realidades sociales: inmigración, problemas familiares, étnicos, etc.
Consideramos que con la actividad del Club de Lectura se cumple la misión principal de la biblioteca: convertir ésta en un centro al servicio de todos los ciudadanos y hacer llegar la lectura y la información a toda la población en general. Ésta es la imagen final que intentamos dar de la biblioteca en el barrio y en la ciudad.
Todo esto ha sido fruto de varios factores: principalmente, la implicación del personal de la biblioteca en la difusión y el desarrollo de la actividad; por otro lado, la capacidad de detectar una necesidad latente que había en el barrio: se trata de un grupo formado en su mayoría por mujeres, jubiladas y/o inmigrantes, tanto extranjeras como de otras comunidades españolas.
La biblioteca, con el Club de lectura, cumple una función tanto cultural como social, que consideramos básica en una biblioteca de barrio.

The Reading Club of Monte Alto (Corunna)has become a meeting place for an important group of people of this neighborhood, which present a challenging social reality: immigrants, aged people, people with family problems, etc. After five years working in this background, we try to offer here a brief summary of our experiences.
We consider that a Reading Club fulfills the main mission of a library: a place for all offering equal access to reading and information.
This success has been possible thanks to several facts: mainly, the personal implication of library staff in the spreading and the development of the activity; but also, the ability to identify the existence of a strong demand by different groups (women, retired and/or inmigrants, either from other Spanish autonomous communities or foreigners).
