Abstract
In this paper, we define the Web Impact Factor (WIF) with explaining its history, advantages and disadvantages. The Web Impact Factor (WIF) is a quantitative tool for ranking, evaluating, categorizing, and comparing web sites, web pages, top-level domains and sub-domains. In addition, we discuss briefly about the differences between the Web Impact Factor and the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), and the utilities of hyperlinks and the WIF in Web indexing.
As a sample, we calculated the WIFs of 15 Iranian universities, and we found that the web sites for Iranian universities have a low inlink WIF. This indicates that for linguistic reasons, Iranian (Persian) sites may not receive and attract the attention that they deserve from the World Wide Web. Moreover, Shahid Beheshti University web site with a WIF of 12/33 had the highest impact factor and the University of Tehran with 9750 web pages had the highest web size between Iranian university web sites.
