L'articolo presenta una rassegna degli studi che hanno affrontato il tema delle radici comuni della biblioteconomia e della documentazione. L'obiettivo è quello di riassumere
i caratteri di queste discipline, di confrontarne le tecniche e di seguirne l'evoluzione storica fino al loro confluire nell'alveo delle scienze dell'informazione. L'analisi si muove sul raffronto tra le esperienze europee e quelle elaborate oltreoceano prima e dopo la seconda guerra mondiale e si snoda in rapporto al progresso tecnologico che ha favorito lo sviluppo di nuove tecniche per il trattamento dell'informazione. In particolare, ci si sofferma sull'impatto che la ricerca scientifica e l'esplosione della letteratura periodica hanno determinato sull'avvento di sistemi innovativi per il trasferimento e il recupero dell'informazione. Un'ultima osservazione riguarda il dibattito in corso sul riconoscimento dell'informazione come disciplina, sulle prospettive delle sue specializzazioni e sull'affermazione di nuovi ambiti di conoscenza e competenza per i professionisti dell'informazione.

A rapid survey on the historical development of ocumentation points out the basic unity in origin of librarianship and documentation, especially in the procedures and operating techniques, and their elaboration, expansion and improvement through the action of documentalists. Technical and technological innovation in information resources management was developed in information centres, i. e. outside the libraries, before and soon after the Second world war. The information explosion, in the second half of the 20th century, needed a best subject control of periodical literature and a different technical organisation of the institutions providing access to recorded knowledge. The attention of international organisations and national governments was so focussed mainly on the area of scientific research, especially for solving the problems of information transfer and its retrieval. At international level documentation is now placed within information science. Considerable debates in library and information science literature about whether information science is a discipline, what kind of discipline ecc. have put on the table again the rivalry between the terms information science and librarianship, documentation and information or
knowledge management. Discussions among information professionals show that a real interest exists in defining a new profile for a profession which seems to involve
challenging competences.
