Abstract
[Spanish abstract] INTRODUCCION: El incremento de la producción científica, del precio de las suscripciones de publicaciones periódicas y del volumen de la colección con las compras consorciadas en los últimos años, ha hecho imprescindible la optimización de la gestión de las colecciones. Las bibliotecas realizan una evaluación continuada de su colección, para construir una colección básica y fortalecida que satisfaga las necesidades y demandas de los usuarios, logrando un equilibrio entre utilidad, calidad y precio. Como complemento a otros métodos de evaluación de uso, algunas bibliotecas están utilizando el análisis de citas bibliográficas de la producción científica de sus usuarios investigadores.
REVISIÓN-OBJETIVO-HIPOTESIS: Realizamos una completa revisión bibliográfica sobre el análisis de citas como método para la evaluación del uso de las colecciones y establecimos la hipótesis de que era un buen indicador para conocer la pertinencia de la colección. Nos marcamos el objetivo de evaluar la colección de nuestras cuatro bibliotecas en una misma especialidad médica, en base al análisis de citas de la producción de sus miembros, como indicador de su uso y necesidades de información.
METODOLOGIA: Buscamos en las bases de datos más importantes para obtener la producción científica del Servicio de Neurología de nuestros centros en el año 2006. Analizamos los datos de producción y de citación, y además en estos últimos su distribución y frecuencia de títulos de revistas y años, su pertenencia a nuestro fondo bibliográfico (individual y consorciado), a bibliotecas de nuestro Comité (consorcio), del resto de España y de fuera de España, así como su correlación.
RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES: Nuestras colecciones propias, tanto de compra individual como consorciada de los últimos diez años, satisfacen más del 77% de las citas bibliográficas utilizadas en la producción científica de nuestros usuarios. El análisis de citas puede ser un instrumento eficaz para evaluar nuestras colecciones tanto en la actualidad como las colecciones básicas que conservamos.
INTRODUCTION: Increases of the scientific production, the price of subscriptions to periodicals and the volume of the collection with purchases consortiums in recent years have made it imperative to optimize the collections management. Libraries make a continuous evaluation of its collection, to build a basic and strengthened collection, which can meet the needs and demands of users, achieving a balance between usefulness, quality and price. As a complement to other used evaluation methods, some libraries are employing the analysis of citations of scientific production of its users investigators.
REVIEW, OBJECTIVE AND HYPOTHESES: We conducted a comprehensive literature review on the analysis of citations as a method of evaluating the use of the collections with the assumption that it could be a good indicator to know the relevance of the collection. We aimed to assess the collection of our four libraries in the same medical specialty, based on the citation analyses from the production of its members, as an indicator of its use and information needs.
METHODOLOGY: We searched the most important databases to obtain the scientific production of the Neurology Department of our Hospital in 2006. We analyzed the production and citation data, and for citation we also analysed the distribution and frequency of journal titles and years, the inclusion in our own literature funds (individual and consortial), the inclusion in one library of our Committee (consortium), the rest of Spain and outside of Spain, as well as their correlation.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our own collections, both individually and consortially purchased in the last ten year, met more than 75% of the citations used in the production of our scientific users. The citation analysis can be an effective tool to evaluate our collections both now and also to decide which basic collections we should preserve.
[English abstract] INTRODUCTION: The increase of the scientific production, the price of the journal subscriptions and the volume of the consortia puchases along the last years, has made unavoidable the optimization of the management of the collections. Libraries carry out a continuous evaluation of their collection in order to build a basic and strong one that satisfies the needs of the users, thus achieving a balance between utility, quality and price. As a complement to other usage evaluation methods, some libraries are using the analysis of bibliographical citations of the scientific production of their users-researchers.
REVISION-OBJECTIVE-HYPOTHESIS: We carried out a complete bibliographical revision on the analysis of citations as a method for the evaluation of the usage of the collections. Then we established the hypothesis that it was a good indicator to know the relevancy of the collection. We evaluated the collection of four libraries.
METHODOLOGY: We looked for the scientific production of the Service of Neurology in 2006 in the most important databases. We analyzed the citations and their distribution and frequency, their presence in our collections (both individual and that of the consortium), of the rest of Spain and of outside of Spain, as well as their correlation.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our last 10-year collections, both individual and consortium, satisfy more than 77% of the bibliographical citations used in the scientific production of our users. The citation analysis can be an effective tool to evaluate our collections at the present time so much as the basic collections that we keep.
