English abstract

The people acting in the fields of medicine and health sciences must learn all over their lives to take care of patients responsibly and to follow the best standards of evidence based medicine. Nowadays, they have to acquire adequate information literacy skills to know: when, where, how and what way find needed high-quality information. The role of medical librarians is to create the best conditions for the development of users’ information literacy skills. That’s why the problem of users’ education was often discussed during annual conferences of Polish medical libraries. The document "Information literacy competency standards for users of Polish medical libraries as a proposition for all the health libraries in Poland" was formulated in the Main Library of the Medical University of Gdańsk in 2006 and in the same year was presented during the 25th Annual Conference in Lublin. The already existing British, American and Australian standards in higher education sector were for us an inspiration. From our point of view, to implement the information literacy competency standards in practice librarians must, among others: - continuously raise the standard of their own professional knowledge - develop their IT skills - improve teaching methods and expand their pedagogic knowledge - be aware of the role of emotional intelligence and how to manage with own emotions in the education process - know what the nonverbal communication is and how important it is - know the law regulations concerning e.g. the author’s rights, copying and citing rules, and follow all changes in this field - improve the English language knowledge (as the basic language in science) In our poster we present the proposed standards, describe how our library workforce develop professional competencies and show how the standards improve the system of users’ trainings in our library.
