English abstract

Introduction: The majority of health sciences libraries are inside the world of public administration. This determines that they have to present their activity results to justify their budgets, and in some cases their existence. The use of contracted information resources for virtual libraries is expensive for the administration, which needs to know what the users are doing with all the resources. Add to this the fact that virtual libraries need to know the user satisfaction with the information resources contracted and detect the training needs for each type of health professional. Objectives: In the Virtual Health Sciences Library of the Balearic Islands we analysed this situation and decided to make an individual study of the statistics system of each contracted information resource. Our objective was to analyzes whether the statistical reports that the distributors offered gave us the data needed to manage the collection. Methods: We analyzed the detailed statistical rates offered for each one of the contracted information resources and finally we compared them with the standard statistical protocol, SUSHI. Results: We observed the different criteria in the data collection, or the lack of them in some cases. Conclusions: We think that the scientific community needs to ponder the following questions: Do we wait for the distributors to give us the data that we need? Do we the right to have this statistical information when we have subscribed to a product? And is it necessary to combine our forces to obtain this? In short, we think that the obtaining of statistical data of each contracted resource that are reliable, uniform and detailed will improve library management. Thus it is necessary to open this discussion in our scientific community and combine forces to obtain a measurable improvement of the bibliometric study of our batches at an international level.

Spanish abstract

Introducción: La mayoría de las bibliotecas de ciencias de la salud viven dentro del mundo de las administraciones públicas, hecho que las condiciona a presentar resultados de su actividad para justificar sus presupuestos y en algunos casos su existencia. El uso de las fuentes de información contratadas por las bibliotecas virtuales conlleva un elevado coste para la administración, que necesita saber el uso real que se está haciendo de cada uno de estos recursos. A ello se une la necesidad de conocer la satisfacción de los usuarios para con los recursos contratados y detectar las necesidades de formación de cada tipo de profesional sanitario. Objetivos: Desde la Biblioteca Virtual de Ciencias de la Salud de las Islas Baleares nos planteamos esta realidad y por ello decidimos estudiar individualmente el sistema estadístico de cada uno de los recursos contratados, a fin de comprobar si se ajustaban a nuestras necesidades. Metodología: Análisis detallado de los datos estadísticos ofrecidos por cada una de las fuentes de información contratadas, comparación entre ellos y finalmente con los datos considerados necesarios para gestionar la biblioteca. Resultados: Se ha observado disparidad de criterios en la recogida de datos, o incluso la carencia de los mismos. Conclusiones: Pensamos que deberíamos plantearnos las siguientes cuestiones: ¿Debemos esperar a que los distribuidores nos den los datos que necesitamos?, ¿tenemos derecho a esta información al suscribir un recurso? y ¿es necesario unir fuerzas para conseguir una mejora? Creemos que es importante ver cómo se están recogiendo actualmente las estadísticas en las bibliotecas virtuales autonómicas y abrir el debate de un problema que supone una gran dificultad en la obtención de indicadores de calidad que ayuden a mejorar la gestión de nuestras bibliotecas.
