English abstract
After providing an overall context of higher education in Mexico we present an overview of the automation of academic libraries in the metropolitan area of Mexico City, particularly as they relate to the concept of a Comprehensive Automated Library System – SIAB. Through the use of a questionnaire and observation we give an account of the systems used, migration processes, use times, methods of acquisition, modules implemented, levels of knowledge and operation, and degree of satisfaction. We found that most libraries have a SIAB, the most commonly used being SIABUC, ALEPH and LOGICAT. However, it appears that the degree of implementation is low, mainly due to a lack of personnel training. In many instances only a limited level of automation was achieved because of the high cost of both the system and its maintenance. A further obstacle to automation is a lack of knowledge about the existence of free software. Only one library had installed software of this kind.

Después de contextualizar la educación superior en México, se ofrece un panorama de las condiciones de automatización de las bibliotecas universitarias en su Área Metropolitana, especialmente en lo que tiene que ver con el Sistema Integral de Automatización de Bibliotecas (SIAB). Mediante la aplicación de un cuestionario y la observación directa, se da cuenta de los sistemas utilizados, los procesos de migración, el tiempo de uso, las formas de adquisición, los módulos implementados, el nivel de conocimiento y operación y el grado de satisfacción. Se encontró que la mayoría de las bibliotecas cuentan con un SIAB, y que los más utilizados eran SIABUC, ALEPH y LOGICAT. Sin embargo, se constató que su grado de implementación es bajo, principalmente por la falta de capacitación del personal a cargo. En muchos casos sólo se ha logrado una automatización muy limitada debido al precio del sistema y al alto costo del mantenimiento. Además, sólo una de las bibliotecas tenía instalado un software libre, lo que indica desconocimiento sobre este tipo de alternativas.
