English abstract

Our project was focused on the first step of Information Literacy, library induction, using an interactive and informal approach. To reach our goal we used a formative online quiz embedded in the Library web site homepage http://www.sba.unimi.it/bibliostoria/ and in the library blog http://bibliostoria.wordpress.com/ from November 2009 to December 2011. We used a software freely available online (MyStudio; now Quizrevolution) that allowed us to create a multiple choice quiz with ten questions about library services. After answering each item (correctly or incorrectly), the quiz displayed a solution as an immediate, explanatory feedback: a short presentation of the service introduced by the test item. At the end of the study we analyzed the quantitative data provided by the software. About 4000 users visited our quiz during the whole period (November 2009- December 2011) and we calculated the percentage of correct answers for each question. This detail was very significant to identify which are the services and facilities better known by users (OPAC and general academic libraries services, rather than our library collection). Main purpose: to let users know library services and facilities in an enjoyable and active manner, through user-oriented instructions in which they are actively involved. Second aim: to obtain information about which services are better (or worse) known by users and need to be more effectively promoted. The project gave us the opportunity to deliver informal user education, making it fun, and to understand which services need more effective promotion. Quiz improved users library skills and motivated them to discover library web site pages.
