Análisis bibliométrico de la producción y colaboración científica en Oriente Próximo (1998-2007)

English abstract

Using Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus, a bibliometric analysis of Middle Eastern countries, focusing on scientific production, thematic field, and collaboration, is presented for the period 1998-2007. Results show that scientific production is trending positively, though there were two significant declines in 2001 and 2004. The analysis of the thematic field demonstrates that these drop-offs for Israel and Saudi Arabia occurred largely in the field of Medicine. The data regarding the evolution of international collaboration in the Middle East also show significant declines in 2001 and 2004. These data are mirrored in data on Western Europe and North America. The fall-off detected in 2001 shows a strong post hoc correlation to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York. The data would suggest that in the aftermath of “9/11”, scientific collaboration in both Israel and Saudi Arabia, especially in the field of medicine, was severely curtailed.

Se presenta un análisis bibliométrico de los países de Oriente Próximo a lo largo del período 1998-2007, centrando el análisis en tres aspectos principales (producción, áreas temáticas y colaboración científica), por medio de Web of Science (WoS) y Scopus. Los resultados muestran que la producción científica presenta una tendencia positiva marcada por dos importantes caídas (2001 y 2004) reflejadas tanto en WoS como Scopus. El análisis temático demuestra que esas caídas son consecuencia fundamentalmente de dos descensos en el área de Medicina en Israel y Arabia Saudí (dos de los cinco países más productivos de la zona). Los datos concernientes a la evolución de la colaboración internacional en Oriente Próximo también muestran importantes caídas en los porcentajes de colaboración en 2001 y 2004. Esos datos se repiten en las áreas geográficas de Europa Occidental y Norteamérica. La caída detectada en 2001 y las consecuencias del ataque terrorista del 11-S están aparentemente correlacionadas (correspondencia temporal, caídas en la producción y en la colaboración científica, y ambas detectadas en WoS y Scopus). Si se asume esto, los datos muestran que los meses posteriores al 11-S repecutieron especialmente en las colaboraciones científicas, lo que provocó una caída en el área de Medicina (el campo más productivo), especialmente en Israel y Arabia Saudí.
