English abstract

This contribution deals with the use and the prospects of multimedia applications of optical media in libraries and other information institutions. First an overview is given of the state of optical storage technology to support multimedia information. This is followed by the exemplary presentation of relevant applications in libraries and picture archives, museums and art galleries, research institutions and in the context of electronic publishing. Problem areas are pointed out, such as indexing, distribution/publication and copyright. In addition, interviews with representatives of the information community indicated prudent retention and moderate knowledge level.
