English abstract

Web criticism in general and search engines criticism in particular have increased in parallel to the importance they gained over time. This paper proposes a categorization of these weaknesses of search engines and the web in order to provide a conceptual clarification. These shadow zones are classified into three levels: technological (issues that directly depend on the technology, whether the limitations in indexing, the list of results or relevance calculation), cognitive (the problems of access and interpretation of the contents by the user) and political (privacy, censorship and other matters affecting people's rights and freedom). In conclusion, we highlight the importance of transversal and interdisciplinary approaches to understand the full complexity of these questions.

Spanish abstract

Las críticas a la Web en general y a los buscadores en particular han ido aumentado de forma paralela a la importancia que han ido adquiriendo con el paso del tiempo. Se presenta una propuesta de categorización de estas críticas o puntos débiles de los buscadores y de la Web con el objetivo de aportar clarificación conceptual. Estas zonas de sombra se clasifican en tres grandes niveles: tecnológico (problemas que dependen directamente de la tecnología, ya sean limitaciones en la indización, lista de resultados, cálculo de la relevancia, etc.), cognitivo (problemas de acceso e interpretación de los contenidos por parte de las personas) y político-social (invasión de la privacidad, censura, etc. que afectan a los derechos y libertades personales). Como conclusión se destaca la importancia de realizar aproximaciones transversales e interdisciplinares para poder abordar estas cuestiones en toda su complejidad.
