English abstract

The main goal of the present research is to outline the theoretical and practical components that should be present in the construction of a conceptualization of the Librarian Social Responsability (LSR), in order to generally join it up to the area of libraries management. The pattern followed in this process has been taken from the statements given by the companies that works with the development of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The study group is formed by the two public libraries that are nowadays functioning in Provincia Cordillera- Región Metropolitana. It is concluded that the LSR concept is not recognized as a determined element inside the duties of these units; and, there is not only a lack of awareness about the topic in both polled institutions, but besides, clear evidences of development inside the oficial levels and organizations that belong to the national library community are not found. For this purpose a sort of mixed survey (open-ended and close ended questions) was applied that allowed us to recognize the uses through which in an implicit way the LSR concept is being used in the management of the public libraries in study.

Spanish abstract

La presente investigación tiene como objetivo general el enunciar los elementos teóricos y prácticos que debiesen estar presentes en la construcción de una conceptualización de la Responsabilidad Social Bibliotecaria (RSB), para poder incorporarlo al ámbito de la gestión en bibliotecas en general. En este proceso se ha tomado como modelo a lo declarado por parte de las empresas mediante el desarrollo de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE). El grupo estudiado corresponde a las dos Bibliotecas Públicas que se encuentran operativas en la actualidad en la Provincia Cordillera - Región Metropolitana. Se concluye que el concepto de RSB no es reconocido como un elemento determinado dentro del quehacer de estas unidades, y que no sólo existe un desconocimiento sobre el tema en las bibliotecas encuestadas, sino que además, no hay evidencias claras del desarrollo dentro de los estamentos y organismos oficiales pertenecientes a la comunidad bibliotecaria nacional. Para ello se aplicó un tipo de encuesta semi estructurada de preguntas que permitió reconocer las prácticas con las cuales se desarrolla de manera implícita el concepto de RSB en la gestión de las bibliotecas públicas examinadas.
