English abstract

Information science is interdisciplinary and multiparadigmatic. What is the distribution of theoretical and methodological choices in the area? We did a pilot study in a random sample of 15 of 112 master's theses defended in the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação (PGCIN) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) from the first defense in 2005 until 2014. Each thesis was classified by worldview according Creswell: postpositivism, social constructivism, advocacy-participatory approach, or pragmatism. We took into account the nexus among worldview, general research strategy and techniques and instruments of investigation. For that reason, each thesis was also classified as quantitative, qualitative, or mixed and its research techniques and instruments were registered. The results indicate 8 theses as quantitative and post-positivist, 3 qualitative (2 constructivist and 1 advocacy-participatory), and 4 pragmatic with mixed research strategy. The results, though not statistically representative, expressed epistemological (also ontological) and methodological diversity, compatible with the characteristic diversity of the area of information science.
