English abstract

The main characteristic of academic monographs or books is that they present a complete and sustained argument on a research question; being for a long time the basis for academic publication, and despite the appearance of new formats, the book continues to be vital in the processes of learning and scientific communication especially in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. In the last two decades there have been crucial changes such as the increase of open access initiatives around the world, this movement affected mainly the journal format, although in the last years, researchers and university publishers are exploring what it means to publish an open access book, ensuring at the same time that the book continues to fulfill its purpose. Open access is understood as the free, immediate and online availability of research and knowledge products. This includes some rights that allow others to reuse the research for non-commercial educational purposes. Unlike journals, e-books have not succeeded in realizing a single model of open access publishing. The financing of these projects usually entails a higher cost, which makes it complex to have a valid model for all publishing services. At present, there are different business models for OA books
