English abstract

At the end of the 20th century it was common to hear voices announcing the extinction of libraries. Undoubtedly, these omens were related to the imminent disappearance of paper books and, more generally, to the dematerialization of the world and the ways in which information and culture were transmitted and stored. But if we stick to the facts, things have not been like that. Quite the opposite.

A finales del siglo XX era frecuente escuchar voces que anunciaban la extinción de las bibliotecas. Sin duda, esos augurios estaban emparentados con la inminente desaparición de los libros en papel y, de manera general, con la desmaterialización del mundo y las maneras en las que se transmitía y almacenaba la información y la cultura. Pero si nos atenemos a los hechos, las cosas no han sido así. Todo lo contrario.

No final do século 20, era comum ouvir vozes anunciando a extinção das bibliotecas. Sem dúvida, esses presságios estavam relacionados ao desaparecimento iminente dos livros de papel e, de forma mais geral, à desmaterialização do mundo e às formas como a informação e a cultura eram transmitidas e armazenadas. Mas se nos atermos aos fatos, as coisas não têm sido assim. O oposto.

French abstract

À la fin du 20e siècle, il était courant d'entendre des voix annoncer la disparition des bibliothèques. Sans doute, ces présages étaient liés à la disparition imminente des livres papier et, plus généralement, à la dématérialisation du monde et des modes de transmission et de stockage de l'information et de la culture. Mais si on s'en tient aux faits, les choses n'ont pas été comme ça. Tout le contraire.
