English abstract
Nowadays, reference managers are invaluable tools to support the tasks of compilation, management and presentation of bibliographic references in research works. With the advent of the Internet and the transfer, by researchers, of their tasks to the web environment, the main reference management systems have evolved from their initial functional character to become collaborative tools whose function and value go beyond the generation of bibliographies. These systems have become true social networks that facilitate the discovery and visibility of information and of the researchers themselves.

Los gestores de referencias, hoy por hoy, son herramientas de un incalculable valor para apoyar las tareas de compilación, gestión y presentación de referencias bibliográficas en los trabajos de investigación. Con la llegada de internet y el traslado, por parte de los investigadores, de sus tareas al entorno web, los principales sistemas de gestión de referencias han evolucionado desde su inicial carácter funcional hasta llegar a ser herramientas colaborativas cuya función y valor van más allá de la generación de bibliografías. Dichos sistemas se han convertido en verdaderas redes sociales que facilitan el descubrimiento y la visibilidad de la información y de los propios investigadores.
