English abstract

Open access journals in Latin America and the Caribbean have succeeded in breakingthe traditional barriers of access to scientific and academic information. The openaccess movement has minimized the economic and geographic restrictions that otherformats of scientific publication have generated, such as journals that apply charges forthe processing of articles. The objective of the study was to identify the benefits forscientific research of publishing in open access journals to the detriment of those thatapply Article Processing Charges. To obtain results, methods at the theoretical andempirical levels were used, especially classic documentary analysis. The results identifythat open access journals in Latin America and the Caribbean have had a significantimpact in increasing the visibility and reputation of researchers and institutions in theregion. In contrast, journals that apply charges for article processing limit access toauthors to socialize their research papers. It was concluded that open access journalsshould be the bet for the socialization of knowledge in Latin America and theCaribbean. The open access movement and the scientific production generated underthis conception constitute a common good in which many researchers can contribute tothe development of the region.

Las revistas de acceso abierto en América Latina y el Caribe han logrado romper lasbarreras tradicionales de acceso a la información científica y académica. El movimientode acceso abierto ha minimizado las restricciones económicas y geográficas que hangenerado otros formatos de publicación científica como lo son las revistas que aplicancargos para el procesamiento de artículos. Se planteó como objetivo del estudioidentificar los beneficios para la investigación científica de publicar en revistas deacceso abierto en detrimento de aquellas que aplican cargos para el procesamiento deartículos. Para la obtención de resultados se emplearon métodos en los niveles teórico yempírico, especialmente el análisis documental clásico. Como resultado se identificaque las revistas de acceso abierto en América Latina y el Caribe han tenido un impactosignificativo en el aumento de la visibilidad y reputación de los investigadores y lasinstituciones de la región. En contraposición, las revistas que aplican cargos para elprocesamiento de artículos limitan el acceso a los autores para socializar sus trabajos deinvestigación. Se concluyó que las revistas de acceso abierto deben constituir la apuesta para la socialización del conocimiento en América Latina y el Caribe. El movimiento deacceso abierto y la producción científica generada bajo esta concepción, constituyen unbien común en el que muchos investigadores pueden aportar al desarrollo de la región.
