English abstract

This presentation reflects on open access and the role of diamond journals in today’s scientific ecosystem. It draws on UNESCO’s recommendations and the 20th anniversary of the BOAI to emphasize the need for inclusive models that do not exclude authors for economic reasons, highlighting equity, sustainability, quality, and usability as key pillars. It outlines the main features of diamond journals—free for both authors and readers, funded mainly by academic or governmental institutions—and presents an international and regional overview that shows their consolidation, in contrast with the growth of APCs in Latin America. Finally, it identifies the challenges these journals face, such as long-term funding, visibility, infrastructure, and academic recognition, while calling on libraries and editorial teams to play an active role in strengthening their quality and sustainability.

Spanish abstract

La presentación reflexiona sobre el acceso abierto y el lugar de las revistas diamante en el ecosistema científico actual, en especial en Argentina. Retoma las recomendaciones de la UNESCO y los 20 años de la BOAI para destacar la necesidad de modelos inclusivos que no excluyan por razones económicas, subrayando la equidad, la sostenibilidad, la calidad y la usabilidad como pilares centrales. Describe las características de las revistas diamante —sin cobro a autores ni lectores, financiadas principalmente por instituciones académicas o gubernamentales— y presenta un panorama internacional y regional que muestra su consolidación, en contraste con el crecimiento de los APCs en América Latina. Finalmente, señala los desafíos que enfrentan: asegurar financiamiento, visibilidad, infraestructura y reconocimiento académico, y propone el rol activo de bibliotecas y equipos editoriales en fortalecer su calidad y sostenibilidad.
