English abstract

Stamped paper appeared in 1637 to provide legal certainty and collect taxes, and it was used on all kinds of notarial, judicial, and municipal documents. Until 1844, it featured the royal coat of arms with slight variations in its design. From that year until 1869, a series of images linked to Greek and Roman mythology, such as Mercury, Ceres, and Athena, or to various activities, such as Justice, appeared. Each seal represented a different allegory and deity. In 1870, the allegory of the matron appeared, which would become the only visible image on the ink seal, and it would change with the various governments. Ultimately, the seal became a microcosm in which every change concerning central power was reflected.

El papel sellado aparece en 1637 con objeto de dar seguridad jurídica y recaudar impuestos y se utiliza en todo tipo de documentos notariales, judiciales, municipales… Hasta 1844 representa las armas reales con leves variaciones en su diseño. A partir de ese año y hasta 1869 se suceden un repertorio de imágenes ligadas a la mitología griega y romana, como Mercurio, Ceres y Atenea, o a diversas actividades, como la Justicia. Cada sello representa una alegoría y divinidad distinta. En 1870 aparece la alegoría de la matrona, que se convertirá en la única imagen visible del sello de tinta, e irá cambiando con los distintos gobiernos. En definitiva el sello se convirtió en un microcosmos en el que todo cambio que se producía referente al poder central quedaba ahí reflejado.
