English abstract

This Open Educational Resource (OER) is a German-language infographic entitled “Hate Speech and Information Disorder,” developed within the GEDIS (Gender Diversity in Information Science) project. The material provides a concise and didactically structured overview of the relationship between hate speech and information disorder in digital communication spaces. The infographic includes: (i) an operational definition of hate speech (with reference to ECRI), (ii) a brief explanation of the relationship between hate speech and information disorder, particularly in the context of polarization and hostility toward individuals and/or vulnerable groups, (iii) an accessible typology of information disorder—misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation—each accompanied by illustrative examples, as well as (iv) a section entitled “The Many Faces of Hate Speech,” which identifies both particularly affected social groups (e.g., refugees, women, queer individuals, persons with disabilities, religious minorities, etc.) and common forms of expression (insults, dehumanizing metaphors, “humorous” memes, threats, body shaming). In addition, the key risks are summarized, including psychological distress for affected individuals, withdrawal from online spaces, the incitement of hatred and violence, and the reinforcement of social polarization.
