English abstract

This paper presents a critical analysis of Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas", examining the transition from the paradigm of cognitive capitalism to the anthropological and social risks stemming from the pervasive adoption of generative AI. Utilizing the biblical metaphor of a "new Babel," the article explores the threats of a false unity built upon thought uniformity, the monopolistic concentration of technological power, and the subordination of human value to technocratic efficiency. The author stresses the urgent need to safeguard the dignity and distinctiveness of human intellectual agency, reinforcing the critical distinction between a conscious "human voice that responds" and an artificial, stochastic "system that produces."

Italian abstract

Il presente contributo offre una lettura critica della prima enciclica di Papa Leone XIV, "Magnifica Humanitas", focalizzandosi sul passaggio dal paradigma del capitalismo cognitivo ai rischi antropologici e sociali legati all'adozione pervasiva dell'intelligenza artificiale generativa. Attraverso la metafora biblica della "nuova Babele", l'articolo esamina i pericoli di una falsa unità basata sull'omologazione del pensiero, sulla concentrazione oligopolistica del potere tecnologico e sulla subordinazione del valore umano a criteri puramente tecnocratici di efficienza. Il testo mette in luce la necessità urgente di preservare la dignità e la specificità dell'agire intellettuale umano, ribadendo la distinzione fondamentale tra la "voce che risponde" con consapevolezza e un sistema artificiale che produce stocasticamente informazioni.
