English abstract

This paper critically examines the systematic and unregulated scraping of public and academic library data and catalog resources by artificial intelligence bots representing major tech companies. The article highlights the paradox faced by public institutions that, by freely exposing high-fidelity structured metadata, risk becoming passive, free data mines for the training of proprietary and commercial AI models. Advocating for an urgent strategic response from the information professional community, the author calls for the reinforcement of local technological infrastructures, the acquisition of advanced digital skills, and the formulation of clear access policies and licensing frameworks to reclaim a proactive, conscious role in safeguarding the digital knowledge commons.

Italian abstract

Il presente contributo esamina criticamente il fenomeno dello sfruttamento sistematico e non regolamentato delle risorse e dei dati catalografici delle biblioteche pubbliche e accademiche da parte dei bot estrattivi delle grandi aziende tecnologiche. L'articolo evidenzia il paradosso di istituzioni pubbliche che, esponendo liberamente i propri dati strutturati ad alta fedeltà, rischiano di trasformarsi in miniere di dati passive e gratuite a vantaggio di modelli di intelligenza artificiale proprietari e commerciali. Sostenendo la necessità di un'urgente reazione strategica da parte della comunità dei professionisti dell'informazione, l'autrice invoca il rafforzamento delle infrastrutture tecnologiche locali, l'acquisizione di nuove competenze digitali e la definizione di politiche di accesso e licenze chiare volte a rivendicare un protagonismo consapevole nella tutela del sapere digitale comune.
