English abstract

This paper gives a sample of the research programmes of the Centre for Informetric Studies, Copenhaguen. It also describes informetrics as a sub-field of bibliometrics discussing its new approach, i.e. the combination of advan-ced information retrieval theories and methodologies with the scientific study of information flows. The Centre aims to apply bibliometric methods not only to scientometric studies and research evaluations of science and technology, but also the analysis of their societal, industrial and other special relations. This means an extension of the traditional bibliometric analyses to cover non-scholarly communities in which information produced, communicated and used. The author also appeals to LIS professionals to face the challenge of this new area of quantitative studies, learning to explore data bases also as a tool to carry out analytical work, emphasizing the possibilities for those professionals to raise their positions in the information work hierarchies, as well as to explore informetric techniques to support the management of decisions and policy making.

Se brinda una muestra de las actividades y los programas de investigación del Centro de Estudios Informétricos de Copenhague. Se describe la informetría como subcampo de la bibliometría y se discute el nuevo enfoque para esta área, a partir de la combinación de teorías y metodologías avanzadas de recuperación de información con el estudio científico de los flujos de información. El centro tiene el objetivo de aplicar los métodos bibliométricos no sólo en los estudios cienciométricos y en las evaluaciones de la investigación científica y tecnológica, sino también en el análisis de sus relaciones sociales, económicas, etc. Ello implica la ampliación de los análisis bibliométricos tradicionales a las comunidades no académicas donde se produce, comunica y utiliza información. Se convoca a los profesionales de biblioteconomía y ciencia de la información a enfrentar el desafío de esta nueva área de estudios cuantitativos y aprender a explorar las bases de datos como instrumentos para desarrollar actividades de análisis. Se enfatizan las posibilidades de estos profesionales de elevar el nivel de su posición jerárquica en el trabajo con la información, así como de explorar las técnicas informétricas para la toma de decisiones y el establecimiento de políticas.
