English abstract

Within the past year the marketplace for search engines has undergone a re-vamping. Some suppliers have gone out of business, other search engines no longer use their own database, but instead buy their data from other search engines. In the field of the large international search engines there remain only a few suppliers. Welcome news is the appearance of several new search engines within the past year. Among the very promising new tools are Teoma, Wisenut and Openfind. In the area of the “Invisible Web” one must wait and see whether it will be possible to integrate findings in this largely unknown area of the WWW in the result listings of “normal” search engines.

"Alle benutzen Google". So lässt sich kurz undprägnant die Entwicklung im Bereich der WWW-Suche in der letzten Zeit auf den Punkt bringen. Durch gute Suchergebnisse und eine schlichte, ausgesprochen gut bedienbare Benutzerschnittstelle hat sich Google als die Suchmaschine für alle Zwecke etabliert. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung fanden größere Veränderungen auf dem Markt statt: Einige Betreiber mussten ihre Suchwerkzeuge aufgeben, neue Firmen haben dafür die Herausforderung angenommen, dem Benutzer noch bessere Ergebnisse oder wenigstens innovative Features zu bieten.
