English abstract

The foundations of development of any society lay both in their educational system and in individuals who are part of that system and who are gaining new knowledge and kills which will be implemented as early as during the process of their education and also later, at the place of their employment. Regardless of its form (classic or electronic learning environment), the success of an active educational engagement of an individual depends on the quality of information resources used in that process, and libraries are the most valuable institutions which can provide quality information with the increasing quantity of library material available online. One of the most interesting topics related to electronic learning environments and libraries is the possibility of linking of course management systems with library holdings for use of library material in them. Development of digital libraries (latest developmental form of libraries) indicates such a possibility as well as the possibility that digital library itself becomes in a part or as a whole a learning environment. The possibility of linking is one of the most important challenges for the advancement of distance education concept. Libraries have also recognized a need for further development of their services to meet new users' needs which appeared under the influence of ICT in libraries and universities.

Croatian abstract
