English abstract

In Latin American countries explicit science policies recognise that scientific research is performed mainly in developed countries. Therefore success of scientific careers is often associated with the visibility of the journals in which scientists of the region publish their reports. ¿How to determine visibility? The Journal Impact Factor (IF) developed at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) is the most common tool used to determine the impact, use or relevance of scientific journals. The IF has been criticised over the years, however, it remains the most used way to evaluate scientific journals.
