English abstract

Given the focus on Information Literacy in an academic context, this contribution to the “Torrossa Retreat 2013” examines the Torrossa platform as a tool for bibliographical research. First, we will consider the educational objectives and methods that should be taken into account when organizing training activities in order to develop information skills, according to international guidelines and standards for Information Literacy. Secondly, using the example of an Italian University Library (Milano-Bicocca), we will observe various Information Literacy-based activities both online and on-site. We will outline indications of efficiency and effectiveness and review data gathered from a Customer Satisfaction survey. We will then put forward a useful model to guide users through the search process, and provide examples of preparatory activities necessary prior to the use of search tools, from subject analysis to the determination of search strategies. Finally, we will look at the various search functions offered by the Torrossa platform and offer a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, demonstrating the following aspects: the utility of the resource as a search tool for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the importance of continual content development and enrichment, the need for further promotion of the resource and for greater user training.
